Story by Katie Tate
From the outside, the Wazee Union looks like any another warehouse with bright yellow paint located next to the train tracks. However, when you walk in you can feel the energy and creativity from all the artists who have studios in the Union. On the second Saturday of every month, the Wazee Union opens their doors to show the public their creations and this Saturday was full of fabulous fashion.
The runway was the hallway of the Union and the guests were able to see the local artists’ creations throughout the warehouse. A number of rooms smelled of fresh paint and hours of dedication. Each room was home to unique creators; there were painters, graphic and graffiti artists, fashion designers, and so on all under one roof.
On January 8th The Vanity Dollz held their Grand Opening, while including featured local designers: Maison De Rose, Kimono Dragons, Miss Kitty Mae, La Meurte, and one in particular, Natasha Lillipore who was also celebrating her own studio grand opening in Union. “I absolutely love it! It’s really amazing to be surrounded by so many talented people who do so many different things,” said Natasha.
Natasha, along with a handful of other designers showcased their beautifully crafted pieces on the 8th. She had three pieces that graced the cold, concrete runway. Her pieces were one of a kind, and beautifully crafted, to say the least. She had detailed, jeweled bras and high wasted panties. “It typically takes me six or more hours, depending on the design. Everything is hand sewn and embellished, so for more intricate designs it can take up to nine or more hours. The embellished panties take anywhere from two to four hours normally” said Natasha.
Her inspiration came from 1920’s vaudeville costumes and circus attire.
“I love how women’s costuming was eccentric, yet classy. I tried to incorporate vintage elements with a more modern twist,” said Natasha. The lingerie pieces were nothing you would find at Victoria Secret, which is a breath of fresh air.
Natasha’s inspiration and schooling is evident in her collection. She is currently attending Emily Griffith and finishing up the professional sewing and fashion design program. “The pattern drafting classes are wonderful, my professor, Ilse Romoth is such an amazing woman. The skills I have learned from her are invaluable, said Natasha.”
Natasha is a local talent that everyone should keep their eyes out for. She is not even 20 years old yet, and she has already showcases amazing pieces. The sky is the limit for her.
